Less than a week and we enter a new year, a new beginning with countless number of aspirations, hope, dreams and plans as we recall; with not much pleasure though, the year that has gone by. Every Nepali has borne the brunt of the political games being played in the country today. Basic necessities have become a thing of the past and everywhere we look there is disillusionment and the music industry is no exception. But now, as winter fades, springs brings with it the promise of new hope and the forever optimistic race that we are, we hope the new year 2066 BS will be a good one. Well, getting back to the topic at hand, the music industry did not fare well at all the past year. Not a single music company that we talked to had any positives to share. Some of them even contemplated shutting down. However, there have been a growing list of new releases, new emerging singers and musicians and a few established ones releasing new material to keep us going during these hard times. If a lot has been attributed to the power crisis hampering studio work and promotions on the electronic media, not all confirm to this view, arguing that there is simply lack of talent emerging these days. Whatever the arguments may be, one thing is pretty certain, all are looking for a better 2066 BS.

 

Looking back at the year that was, it would suffice if we said that 2065 BS was a mediocre one for the music industry. Names likes Sugam Pokharel, Avinash Ghishing, Damber Nepali, Roj Moktan, Dibya Subba, Nima Rumba, Sanjaya Kishor, Ramkrishna Dhakal, Rajesh Payel Rai, Mingma Shrerpa, Satya / Sworup Raj Acharya, Suzil Karmacharya, Hemanta Sharma, Anju Pant, Reshma Sunuwar, Mausami Gurung, Pooja Lama, Radha Rai, Satyakala Rai, Aanjana Gurung, Ciney Gurung, Nalina Chitrakar and the likes managed to keep up the hype associated with them. Similarly, bands such as Axe Band, Karma Band, Nepathya, 1974 AD, Robin & The New Revolution, Mukti & Revival, Naipal Band and Abhaya &The Steam Injuns made it to the headlines because of their sheer popularity. However, it was the debut efforts of a few aspiring young talents that was mostly recognized during the past one year. Sunil Rana Bhat, Kalyan Singh, Puran Rai, Nisha Sunar, Seeta KC, Bipana Dhital, Kala Rai, Phurshang Lama, Kishan Gurung, Kamal Chettri, The Band Of Generation, Bikash Shrestha and a few others are some names that we can surely look out for this coming year.
