Are the expert’s thoughts just their personal opinions or are they genuine facts? This is something we could discuss at a later stage. However, if this is to be believed, how would then one explain the very few youngsters making sugam sangeet and hitting it big time here in Nepal? You could practically count the number of young aspiring singers pursuing sugam sangeet in your finger tips. But the fact that there have been a few and have proved their worth by being successful as well, speaks volumes, thus contradicting the existing trends, especially in the context of the Nepali music industry. There have been constant accusations by the older generation of singers advocating that the new crop of singers and musicians do not give a damn to the importance and values of sugam sangeet but then again, we do have some of them who eat, sleep, live and swear by it. So personally, we do feel that not all have abandoned the bandwagon.
In a related thought and among the unusual rush of new artists fighting for their share of the pie, it is certainly heartening to report on a certain Lokendra Rai who, if what industry insiders say is true, is someone who could take sugam sangeet to a new high altogether. Pretty lofty claim one would presume! His debut album ‘Yaadma’, comprising of lyrics written by Dinesh K Rai has hit the stands to a surprisingly good response which have Ram Sitaula, Shyam Sundar, Deni Niraula, Raju Singh and Hemanta Chemjong as the music arrangers. Released under the banner of Times Music, ‘Yaadma’ consist of six singles and two music tracks with the music video of the song ‘Pal Pal’ slowly creeping into the charts of numerous TV channels.
